ARTSBRIEFING Bromberg played harp on Sgt. Pepper
LONDON — Sheila Bromberg, the first woman to perform on a Beatles’ album, has died in an Aylesbury, England hospice at age 92.
Bromberg, a classically-trained harpist worked with the Bee Gees, “Monty Python” and Frank Sinatra, but is remembered for performing the first few bars on harp of “She’s Leaving Home” on the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album.
She was paid only nine pounds (less than $200 in today’s money) for the uncredited three-hour session with Paul McCartney. Famed producer George Martin was absent from the studio that night.
Although she did multiple takes, it was ultimately the first take that ended up on the album.
